Human augmentation: the ‘Goldilocks’ application for robotics?

Sagentia, a global science, product and technology development company, is speaking today on human augmentation in robotics at RoboBusiness 2014 in Boston. Dr Nick Collier, Sagentia’s Chief Technology Officer, will be presenting to leaders from across the global robotics industry on the opportunity for robotics to augment humans and enable them to do more, better and different.

Human augmentation is about making the most of our skills, for example through augmentation of intellect, of physical ability, or of sense. Using robotics for human augmentation has the potential to repair damage and enable us to go beyond the natural limits of our bodies, eg to move faster, lift heavier weight, or see more. An example of this is the use of haptics technology in surgical robotics, which enables the surgeon to operate remotely and be more dexterous while still retaining a delicate sense of touch. Using robotics in this way also opens up the opportunity for robotics to be employed in new application areas, such as harsh and dangerous environments, where previously risk or complexity might have prevented it from being adopted.

During the presentation, Dr Collier will explore the technologies that enable human augmentation, using examples from diverse industries including haptic feedback for medical devices, process robotics for point of care diagnostics and remote actuation robotics for oil and gas platforms. He will discuss how these technologies can be applied and where value is best placed in their implementation.

Dr Collier comments: “Our view of how robotics will impact our lives has changed greatly from the 1950s ideal of a robot in every home, through the 1980s where robotics replaced a human workforce, to now where we seem to be on the brink of a robotics revolution. We believe using robotics for human augmentation could be the ideal, “just right” application. It enables the human to do what they’re good at – decision making – and robots to do what they’re good at – high precision repetitive tasks. This could really open up opportunities for robotics and new approaches across many industries.”

Sagentia’s participation at the event is part of its growing activity in the field of robotics. The company is seeing an increasing number of clients across industries looking for robotics based technology and product developments that enable them to add new functionality, improve efficiency and improve safety. Recent projects include the development of a haptic system capable of helping surgeons feel what they are manipulating, to full development of a robotically controlled surgical system, and integrating object identification into a domestic appliance.
