Huntingdonshire Business Network backs the world’s largest and oldest children’s charity

Huntingdonshire Business Network (HBN) today announces its decision to back the world’s largest and oldest children’s charity, the YMCA.

Help us create a happier, healthier workforce for tomorrow.

The organisation, which provides practical help for businesses in the area, will run its first fundraising event, ‘Unlocking Innovation and Growth within Your Business’ at the Alconbury Business Park next Friday (Oct 9) with proceeds of ticket sales going straight to the YMCA’s School Counselling Programme.

More than 850,000 children in the UK now suffer with a mental health problem.

The YMCA works with young people between the ages of five and 27, regardless of gender, race or religion and with children from the poorest to the richest homes.

Just some of the issues addressed by the School Counselling Programme include transition, bullying, cyber bullying, family and relationship issues, bereavement, social skills, mental health issues, substance misuse, abuse and sexuality.

HBN Chair Richard Wishart said: “HBN has been providing micro businesses with support for the past 15 years, and many of our members regularly attend our weekly Friday meetings. Although our members have their own micro businesses, our skills are relevant to medium and large businesses. We invite these businesses to support our community, by attending this event, to discover more about what services our members can provide and simultaneously contribute to the YMCA, which is making a difference with their school counselling service.”

‘Unlocking Innovation and Growth Within Your Business’ is specifically aimed at helping medium to large businesses in the area find innovative ways to grow their business with expert help on implementing their vision.

“Firms need to provide their people with the optimal level of skill for their roles”, says Nick Smith of EAM Consulting Ltd. “Overtraining results in learning that is not applied in the workplace and so is scrap learning, while undertraining will impair the performance of the business. Both of these reduce the bottom line.”

“The key is to provide training that enables individuals to deliver the required job performance and to ensure that all concerned know what this is and how it will be measured. This will greatly enhance the transfer of learning into workplace performance.”

Smith adds that “measurement of job performance will enable any issues with the training or its application to be identified and addressed sooner rather than later. This event will provide attendees with a framework for drafting measurable, outcome-led objectives that can ensure that the desired business results are achieved.”

Annette Williams outlined the uniqueness of simulation training by saying “It takes most Project Managers years of practice to achieve analytical competence, the ability to read into project situations with the necessary insight and understanding to turn an issue driven project into a positive goal orientated experience.

"With our unique 'Flight simulations for Leaders', we effectively provide three months on-the-job training in three days, which delegates can be apply once back at work.”
