ICE’s Invisible Superheroes have been chosen from its membership past and present – from Thomas Telford's incarnation as 'Colossus' to graduate water engineer Brittany Harris's 'Water Woman' and engineering technician Lloyd Clough's 'Super Structures' – to provide inspiring role models for the next generation.
What is the Big Bang Fair?
The Big Bang Fair (14th - 17th March 2018 - NEC, Birmingham) is the largest celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths in the UK, introducing young people to the incredible variety of career opportunities in these fields. It attracts over 80,000 visitors.
The ICE Invisible Superheroes stand at the Big Bang Fair will challenge young people to help 'Save Civil City' by completing three civil engineering challenges: balancing bridges, fight the flood and propping up Pisa. The exciting city structure stand is going to be a real head-turner and providing superhero masks and capes for volunteers to join in the fun.

Invisible superheroes exhibition - Now open
Invisible Superheroes is our year-long exhibition at One Great George Street, Westminster focusing on the unsung heroes behind some of the world’s most amazing engineering projects. Using state-of-the-art technology the exhibition brings to life the best examples of civil engineering. The unique comic book look will help inspire the next generation of engineers and create a memorable experience for everyone who visits. Join us in celebrating the crucial role engineers have played for society throughout the past 200 years.
The Institution of Civil Engineers
Founded in 1818, the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) is a UK-based international organisation with over 91,000 members, ranging from students to professionally qualified civil engineers. It is an educational and qualifying body and has charitable status under UK law. Under our Royal Charter, ICE has become recognised worldwide for its excellence as a centre of learning, as a public voice for the profession and as a leading source of expertise in infrastructure and engineering policy.
ICE 200 is a perfect opportunity to celebrate the institution’s longevity, recognise the profession of civil engineering and most importantly the thousands of members who make the institution what it is. ICE will use the bicentenary to remind the general public that civil engineers transform their lives for the better and safeguard the future for their families. In doing so, the institution also hopes to encourage young people to see civil engineering as a creative, rewarding and highly enjoyable career.
