IWM Duxford's American Air Museum officially opened by HRH The Duke of Kent

Yesterday (Thursday), saw the official opening of IWM Duxford’s transformed American Air Museum by His Royal Highness The Duke of Kent, President of the Board of Trustees for Imperial War Museums since 1974.

The newly-transformed American Air Museum tells the story of Anglo-American collaboration in 20th and 21st century conflict, as seen through the eyes of the people linked with the aircraft and objects on display. It focuses on the key role played by American air power, in conflicts from 1918 to the present day, with dramatic displays of historic and contemporary aircraft.

The American Air Museum’s official opening ceremony began with a Colour Guard from RAF Mildenhall. This was followed by the dedication of a new sculpture, generously donated to the American Air Museum, by Ross Perot, Jr. and his wife Sarah. The Honor Guard, designed by award-winning sculptor Zenos Frudakis, comprises four bronze figures. Two are flag bearers – one holding an eight-foot tall US flag, the other an Air Force flag, while the remaining two figures are weapons bearers. The sculpture is a replica – the only one outside the USA - of the sculpture standing at the National Air Force Memorial in Washington DC.*

After the dedication, The Duke of Kent declared the American Air Museum officially open and guests witnessed a fly past of a Boeing KC-135  Stratotanker and a McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle, courtesy of the United States Air Force, followed by  a short display by a P-51 Mustang.

Diane Lees, Director-General of IWM said ‘Today is a hugely significant day for all of us at IWM Duxford – and we are privileged that His Royal Highness The Duke of Kent officially opened our transformed American Air Museum, witnessed by so many of those who have contributed to it. I would like to thank Ross Perot, Jr. and his wife Sarah for the Honor Guard sculpture, which is a truly magnificent sight for all who work and visit here.’

Mr Ross Perot, Jr. said ‘It is such an honor to have the US National Honor Guard on display at the Imperial War Museum at Duxford. When our family had the piece commissioned by Zenos Frudakis, we wanted it to be displayed where people could not only appreciate the grace and pageantry it represents, but also learn of the important role American forces played in protecting freedom.  We could not be more pleased that the Honor Guard will be displayed among Imperial War Museums’ exceptional collection.’

IWM Duxford’s transformed American Air Museum, containing the best collection of American aircraft on display outside North America, will open to the public on Saturday 19 March.  From Private to President, the American Air Museum tells the personal stories of 85 people whose lives have shaped or been shaped by their experiences of conflict.
