Leading thinker in data visualisation heads to UK for free seminar

Prism Training & Consultancy and statistical software provider SAS JMP are to welcome JMP Director of Research and Development Xan Gregg to the UK for a special free seminar titled 'High-Impact Data Visualisation: Information Discovery Made Simple' at the Trinity Centre, Cambridge Science Park on Tuesday 22 March.

In statistics, data visualisation is our most efficient tool for understanding data, but it’s far from perfect. A graph can be an imperfect representation of that data, making our understanding of it imperfect too.

But don’t despair…

Fresh from delivering a keynote presentation at last year’s JMP Discovery Summit titled "All Graphs Are Wrong… But Some Are Useful", Xan (pictured) heads to the city to explain how using an understanding of visual perception can help you make better, high-impact visualisations.

Xan leads data visualisation development at JMP, a business unit of Statistical Analysis Software (SAS) that specialises in data visualisation software. As Director of Research and Development at JMP, he created the Graph Builder feature introduced in JMP 8 and continues to be its principal developer.

A frequent contributor to the JMP Blog, an active participant on visualisation question-and-answer sites Cross Validated and HelpMeViz, and known for his series of graph-makeover posts, Xan is also founder of the #OneLessPie social media campaign which seeks to replace inappropriate pie charts with better alternatives.

Andrew Macpherson, Managing Director, Prism said "JMP's flexible and interactive nature makes it incredibly easy to manipulate data and create powerful visualisations in just a few moments. It's also great that the scripting language allows us to extend the already impressive range of functionality, enabling us to create bespoke applications for our clients. We're looking forward to welcoming the creator of these features to Cambridge."

Paul Nelson, Technical Director, Prism said "If you want to hide information then put it into a data table, or better still in a table in an appendix. If you want show information then put it in a graph. A picture is worth a thousand words and JMP's powerful visualisation tools have provided Prism and our clients with the ability to instantly and easily create linked graphs, so that everyone can interact with the data to gain insight and exploit opportunities that can often remain buried."

JMP is a business unit of SAS that produces interactive software for desktop statistical discovery. John Sall, SAS co-founder and Executive Vice President, created this dynamic software and remains its chief architect and leader of the JMP division. Introduced in 1989 with scientists and engineers in mind, JMP has grown into a family of statistical discovery products used worldwide in almost every industry. From its beginnings, JMP software has empowered its users by enabling interactive analytics on the desktop.

Prism was founded in 2000 and now boasts more than 120 clients across the UK, Europe, USA and Singapore, ranging from early phase start-ups through to large, multi-national corporations.

All are welcome to the free event (13:00 - 15:30), although registration in advance is essential due to limited space. To register, please visit www.prismtc.co.uk/jmp
