"The Lingang Speed": World-class EV and energy cluster builds up from TESLA

TESLA located in Lingang, Shanghai - the home of Lingang Cambridge Network, which EFEC helped to set up with The Cambridge Network in 2019. Every 45 seconds a new TESLA vehicle rolls off the production line in Lingang and the giant factory' success has helped grow a globally significant cluster of EV suppliers and energy companies.

A view out over Lingang from the Lingang Cambridge Network office

The pandemic may have slowed some things down but the pace of advance in Lingang has carried on as before – in this case, leading the way in the news industrial clusters based on EV manufacture – and reaching into suppliers and energy suppliers.

It is a classic case study in innovation driving innovation, networks and attracting talented people.

By the sea at Lingang, new EVs, hot from the production line are neatly parked at the Tesla Shanghai Gigafactory in Lingang. They are about to set sail for the Port of Antwerp-Bruges in BelgiumImage removed.

Looking out over Lingang

In 2022, Tesla's Shanghai Gigafactory delivered a total of 710,000 new Tesla cars, of which 270,000 were exported overseas, accounting for about 40% of China's total new energy vehicle exports last year. Today, a new car rolls off the assembly line every 45 seconds.

Not far from Tesla's Shanghai Gigafactory is another major new energy vehicle manufacturer - SAIC's Lingang Passenger Vehicle Production Base. The MG new energy vehicles have become best-selling vehicles in many countries..

Innovation drives production and Tesla’s first overseas R and D Centre opened in Lingang in October, 2021. And innovation  attracts innovation. Less than 3 km from the Tesla Lingang Super Factory, is the CATL intelligent manufacturing base of power battery modules of CATL-RT.  It is mainly responsible for the production of battery modules and supplies lithium iron phosphate batteries for Tesla Shanghai gigafactory.

This is not all: in May 2021, eighteen smart new energy vehicle industry projects were signed and started in Lingang, with a total investment of over 16 billion yuan. In the same year, new energy vehicles became the first 100-billion-level industrial cluster in Lingang. Following in the footsteps of Tesla, SAIC and other OEMs, intelligent new energy vehicles such as Cummins, Horizon, SenseTime, CATL, Shanghai Jayson, Yanfeng Motor, Guangwei Wanxiang, DSBJ, Magna, Lister, etc.

Leading companies in subdivided fields have settled in Lingang, covering automotive chips, automatic driving systems, automotive interiors, car bodies, new materials, precision machining and other fields.

And as the the industrial cluster of new energy vehicles is expanding, talent is also attracted by the open and inclusive Lingang community.

As a new hot spot for Shanghai's new energy vehicle industry, Lingang plans to improve the supply chain agglomeration around SAIC, Tesla, etc., and introduce more leading supporting enterprises to form industrial agglomeration and ecological complementarity differentiated development pattern.

Lingang also has a presence  in the potential fields of new energy such as hydrogen, with 14 hydrogen refuelling stations to be built, realizing the large-scale use of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles in the main urban area. In terms of enterprises, Lingang has gathered high-quality hydrogen energy enterprises such as Cummins, Zhizhen, Shanghai Hydrogen, and Tangfeng.
