A zero carbon EpiQair engine powered genset with air battery energy storage
Epicam Ltd. submitted their ingenious idea after Cummins, the largest independent maker of diesel engines and related products in the world, called on innovators of all sizes to come forward with sustainable innovations to help Cummins achieve their Environmental targets in the UK.
The Cummins Environmental Gateway, launched in partnership with Marcela Navarro, CEO of Business Cubed (formerly responsible for the successful launch and deployment of the RBS Innovation Gateway), is looking for green and innovative suppliers to positively impact Cummins 2020 Environmental targets whilst promoting supplier inclusion.
The project team, led by Denis Ford, Corporate Indirect Purchasing Leader EMEA, NE/SE Asia & South Pacific at Cummins, is delighted with the quality of the finalists. “We have been very impressed with the quality of the innovations received and even more with the potential for environmental impact and savings. Epicam should be very proud to be a finalist in the Cummins Environmental Gateway”.
Epicam Ltd. Is a Cambridge based small business with novel patent protected rotary devices whose unique displacement action provides compression or expansion in compressible fluids without internal friction. Having proved the technology in a novel rotary IC engine, Epicam has now applied it to cryogenic air cycle systems for zero carbon power and energy storage applications.
Epicam inventor Tony Dye explains that “as railways were run for over a century on the liquid to steam phase change in water, so it should not be surprising to found a new era of power delivery on the same change of state in air occurring at about -200 C. The advantage with air is it needs no combustion. Atmospheric heat is adequate for the job. It needs only an engine without internal friction and high speed capability. The EpiQair engine does that and is set to introduce a new era of zero carbon energy storage and universal power delivery”.

Epicam was one of over 100 companies from across the globe that submitted an innovation to the Cummins Environmental Gateway when Cummins UK launched the programme back in August 2016.
Their idea will be presented this week (March 2), to a high calibre panel formed by, among others:

- Richard Keane (Global Operations FE Director)
- Mark Dhennin (Director Energy & Environment)
- Denis Ford (International Sourcing Leader, EMEA, NE/SE Asia & South Pacific)
- Professor Steve Evans – Director of Research and Industrial Sustainability: Cambridge University
- Geoff Burnand – CEO: Investing For Good
They will decide which innovations will have the opportunity to be implemented, and if successful, scaled up, on Cummins sites in the UK.
Tony Dye notes that “Projects like the Cummins Environmental Gateway provide a great opportunity for innovations to gain recognition and credibility on a national and international scale, accelerating our opportunities to access markets and license the transfer of our technology on a global basis.
"This project with Cummins would help Epicam to establish a proper basis for the full development of our technology, including establishment of the appropriate manufacturing technology that will be required and training in new manufacturing techniques. It could help to open up new opportunities for UK manufacturing with prospects for entry into global export markets."
Finalists like Epicam, if successful, will have the opportunity to test their innovations in Cummins sites in the UK.

Called the Environmental Gateway, it aims to discover innovative submissions from suppliers to Cummins’ UK facilities, whose goods and services can assist the company in achieving and surpassing environmental targets.
