Local small business celebrated for scaling success

Cambridge small business Alma Business Consulting celebrated at House of Lords for national growth programme.

Dr Sarah Mardle - CEO of Alma Business Consulting

Sarah Mardle, founder of Alma Business Consulting, has been recognised for their achievements at a special House of Lords reception after completing a national programme designed to support the UK’s smallest and most promising firms to scale.

Sarah was among hundreds of microbusiness owners and sole traders from across the UK to take part in Small Business Britain’s recent Small and Mighty Enterprise Programme, which helps unlock growth for the UK’s smallest firms.

The free, six-week programme was delivered online by Small Business Britain, in partnership with global small business platform Xero and business academics at ARU Peterborough

Alma Business Consulting specialises in empowering leaders and businesses to achieve sustainable growth and operational excellence. Combining expertise in business operations, regulatory compliance, and leadership development, Alma offers tailored solutions that drive transformation and long-term success.

Sarah said “it was wonderful to be part of a community of British small business founders who are keen to learn and keen to support each other.”

Since launching in 2022, the Small and Mighty Enterprise Programme has now supported over 5,000 small businesses, combining expert-led teaching with mentorship to equip entrepreneurs with the tools and knowledge to take their first steps towards sustainable growth.

Michelle Ovens CBE, Founder and CEO of Small Business Britain, said

“Microbusinesses are a huge part of our economy, yet too often they are overlooked when it comes to the practical support they need to succeed.”

“It was fantastic to come together at the House of Lords to recognise Sarah and the many inspiring entrepreneurs who completed the programme. Celebrations like this matter, as ambitious microbusinesses need visible support and recognition as they build, grow and contribute to our economy.”

With an aim to unlock opportunity for microbusinesses at the heart of powering future economic growth, each participating business receives weekly guidance on areas including business strategy, marketing, finance and resilience. This is alongside support to develop a tailored action plan for the year ahead.

Kate Hayward, UK Managing Director at Xero, said

“Running a small business is a dream for millions, but we know a lack of financial confidence can lock the door on their growth. Many say they are ‘not a numbers person’ and feel they should know more, but are too afraid to ask. The Small and Mighty Enterprise Programme provides essential training and support to reduce the fear around figures, giving entrepreneurs the confidence to take their business to the next level. It's a privilege to celebrate the business owners graduating at the House of Lords and we can't wait to see them flourish.”
