M1 bridge demolition wins photo competition

A stunning image of a bridge demolition on the M1 Junction 12 has won Terry Higginson of Biggleswade the first prize of £100 in Picture This 2013 – the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) East of England annual photograph competition.

One of the judges Daniel Jones himself a professional photographer said the picture is: "an outstanding image which looks like a scene from a sci-fi blockbuster. The lighting, exposure and composition are all perfect. This is an atmospheric picture that I would be delighted with if I had taken it."

Picture This was started in 2008 by the ICE East of England Region to source images that can be used to illustrate to the public what civil engineering is about. This year there are 28 entries.

Terry who works for the Costain Carillion Joint Venture to improve Junctions 10-13 of the M1 also scored a first in the competition's history. Entrants can submit two pictures and Terry's second image of the same scene was equal runner up. The other runner up was Chris Hutchinson RES Group at Kings Langley with his picture of the construction of Wadlow Wind Farm, Cambridgeshire. Sadly thereare no prizes for runners up however if sponsorship is acquired in 2014 this may change.

Each judge is sent a zip file containing the entries and an index sheet on which they are asked to mark each picture out of 10. A space for comments is available if required. The judges vote independently and do not confer. The aggregate score delivers the winner/s. This year the judges are:

  • Nick Baveystock, Director General, Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE)
  • Chris Yapp, Chairman, ICE Hertfordshire & Bedfordshire Graduates & Students
    Committee
  • Daniel Jones, Professional Photographer www.danieljonesphotography.co.uk

Terry's winning image scored a perfect 30. The runners up each scored 27. Please see the list entries and scoring sheet (at the end) for all the scores and comments. From 2014 the competition will be re-branded This is Civil Engineering.
