Diseases such as dengue fever, malaria and Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever were once thought of as tropical diseases, but the Health Protection Agency say malaria and dengue could come to the UK by 2020.
A warmer, wetter climate will provide the perfect breeding ground for pests such as malaria-carrying mosquitoes.
The increased use of salt marshes for flood defences, extreme flooding and the increasing proximity of tick-carrying animals all mean health risks to humans are increased.
Dengue was detected in France and Croatia in 2010, and malaria in Greece in 2011. In the UK, previously rare diseases such as Lyme disease has increased fourfold in the last 10 years, according to the HPA.
This increased health risk closer to home suggests we should be taking bite prevention care more seriously, including clothing spray and insect repellents.
