Marshall of Cambridge visited by HRH The Duke of Kent

His Royal Highness, Prince Michael of Kent GCVO, paid a private visit to Marshall of Cambridge on Wednesday 10 April to be updated on the work of the Group of Companies.

Prince Michael had previously visited Marshall of Cambridge in 1995 when he opened the car centre on the Newmarket Road.

During his visit Prince Michael visited the Aircraft Design Office, manufacturing workshops in the North Works and aircraft hangars, escorted by Sir Michael Marshall.  He was accompanied by his Private Secretary, Mr Nicholas Chance.  At the end of his visit, Prince Michael planted a commemorative tree, a Sorbus, which joins eight other trees behind the Head Office building which have been planted by members of the Royal Family during visits to Marshall of Cambridge during the last 15 years.

Sir Michael Marshall said: “It was an enormous pleasure to welcome Prince Michael to Marshall of Cambridge and we were delighted by the huge interest he took in everything we are doing.  Prince Michael was pleased to talk to a number of our employees about their training and their work at Marshall of Cambridge”.

Founded in 1909 with little capital as a chauffeur drive company in Cambridge, Marshall moved into the retail motor business in 1910, obtained the Austin Distributorship for Cambridgeshire in 1920 and entered the aviation business in 1929.  With all its growth funded by ploughed-back profits, the Marshall Group remains a privately owned family Company, with a turnover of over £1bn per annum.  The Group of Companies is chaired by the third generation of the Marshall family, and employs members of the fourth generation.  The Group currently employs just over 4,000 people working in the fields of aerospace engineering; design and manufacture of specialist vehicle applications, military mobility shelters and hospital surgical units; motor vehicle sales and after sales support; refrigerated transport sales and support; and property ownership and management.   (www.marshallgroup.co.uk)

Marshall began its apprenticeship training in 1920 and has offered apprentice training on an unbroken basis ever since.  Apprentices have been achieving first class results in National programmes with former apprentice Michael Shingfield recently gaining a First Class Honours Degree in Mechanical Engineering and winning the best final year project from de Montfort University.  David Firth was also the Regional winner and National runner-up of the 2012 Engineering Employers Federation Apprentice Competition.
