The Mayoral Hustings on Environment, Climate Change and Sustainability is being organised by Cambridge Carbon Footprint and Anglia Ruskin University’s Global Sustainability Institute, in association with Cambridge Cleantech. It is partnered with Peterborough Environment City Trust, who will be broadcasting a live stream at University Centre, Peterborough.
Taking part will be James Palmer (Conservative candidate), Julie Howell (Green), Peter Dawe (Independent), Kevin Price (Labour) and Rod Cantrill (Lib Dem). The event will be chaired by Professor Aled Jones, Director of Anglia Ruskin University’s Global Sustainability Institute.
Anne Miller, of Cambridge Carbon Footprint, said: “We decided to organise this hustings because the Mayor will have real power over issues that lots of people care about.
“Whether you want cleaner air, better trains and buses, more energy efficient homes, more abundant nature or more action to prevent climate change; these are all areas the Mayor and the new combined authority, with their responsibility for housing and transport, will have a big say in.”
Professor Jones, of Anglia Ruskin’s Global Sustainability Institute, said: “The Devolution agreement for the Cambridge-Peterborough area will see our first elected Mayor in May. The Global Sustainability Institute at Anglia Ruskin is delighted to be hosting and chairing this debate of the candidates on issues associated with sustainability.
“We are also delighted to have a PhD researcher, sponsored by Sustainability East, who will be working over the next three years to get a better understanding of what the vision for our region is as the new Combined Authority starts its work and looks towards the second and third devolution agreements as they are developed and more powers are given to the region.”
Martin Garratt, CEO of Cambridge Cleantech, said: “Cambridge and Peterborough is a leading European hub for environmental goods and services, or cleantech companies, and so it is important that we test the attitudes of the mayoral candidates about the importance of the environment so that we can retain this top spot and benefit both the local economy and the quality of the environment.”
The event, which begins at 6pm at Anglia Ruskin’s Cambridge campus, is free to attend but booking is requested via the eventbrite page. People are also encouraged to join in via Twitter, using #cpmayor17.
