Third-year Molly Smith, who has been a course representative for the BSc Paramedic Science degree for the past two years, received national recognition for her dedication to her studies.

The College of Paramedics stated in a letter to Molly that the award was given “in recognition of your achievements and determination in your academic studies”.

She was also praised for her “extra-curricular efforts in lending support to fellow students” and “genuine commitment to promoting the value of the paramedic profession”.

While in her second year, Molly helped set up a “buddy system” where first-years are paired up with a more experienced student for support and to be able to ask questions and seek advice.

Inspired to enter the profession by her love of biology classes while at school and experiences with the St John Ambulance Service, Molly has been offered a job with the East of England Ambulance Service on completion of her degree.

Molly, 21 and originally of Parc Bodnant, Llandudno, said: “Winning this award is and honour and has shown that my hard work and dedication throughout the last three years was worthwhile, not only for my academic benefit, but for the benefit of Anglia Ruskin University and my peers and hopefully future student paramedics.

“I love the ever changing environment of being a paramedic – you never know what you will see or do at the start of each shift. This means you meet new people from different backgrounds every day allowing you to learn more about different people, cultures and the world.

“People turn to paramedics when they are in need of help and it’s nice to think that in what is an awful time for someone, as paramedics we can try to make a difference and make the person’s day a bit brighter.”

Richard Nicholson, Molly’s tutor at Anglia Ruskin, said: “Molly is an outstanding student who has shown, throughout her three years of study, that with the right attitude and commitment you can achieve your goals.

“Molly has represented herself, her peers and the paramedic profession in a mature and professional way on many occasions. She has demonstrated a commitment to her studies and overcoming barriers, showing a drive for learning and self-development.  This has all accumulated in an admiration and respect from her lecturing staff, peers and placement practice educators.

“Molly is an asset to Anglia Ruskin University and the paramedic profession and wholly deserves the College of Paramedic’s Student Paramedic of the Year award.”
