New bicycle parking spaces to get CUH staff ‘fit for the future’

The chair and chief executive of Cambridge University Hospitals formally opened a secure bike park for staff last week as part of the Trust’s new campaign to promote healthy lifestyles for staff and patients.

The 110-space bicycle parking facility is located on Richard Howe Way, opposite Barton House. The parking is covered, lit and is within a secure enclosure, with staff swipe card access. It brings the total number of bicycle parking spaces available on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus to 2436.

Trust chair Jane Ramsey and chief executive Keith McNeil cut the ribbon to mark the formal opening of the facility.

Jane Ramsey said: “This new bicycle parking provides staff with another secure, large capacity facility close to the centre of the campus with easy access into the hospital. Already a third of our staff travel to work by bicycle and I hope that more staff will now be encouraged to do so.”

Keith McNeil said: “We are absolutely committed to enabling as many of our staff as possible to use a sustainable means of transport such as cycling to work. Cycling is a great way to get fit and reduces the number of cars clogging up the roads and the amount of car parking spaces we need to provide. The new bike park is part of our renewed campaign to encourage staff and patients to live healthy lifestyles and we hope to make further announcements over the next few months.”

The Trust is a member of the national Cyclescheme which allows staff to purchase normal and electric bicycles with payments coming directly out of the employee’s monthly salary.

The Trust is updating its draft travel plan which will be published by the end of the year.
