New biodiesel technology wins prestigious IChemE Sustainable Technology Award

Johnson Matthey Davy Technologies wins an award for its innovative reactive distillation technology, which produces renewable, clean burning biodiesel fuel.

The team at Johnson Matthey Davy Technologies is behind a new development involving reactive distillation for biodiesel production which was recognised at the prestigious annual Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) Awards last week. The awards provide a platform to recognise and reward chemical engineering innovation and excellence in the UK.

The innovative process transforms a usually hard to dispose of byproduct into a sustainable clean productThis innovative technology produces biodiesel, a clean burning fuel that can be used in place of regular diesel in cars, trucks and other vehicles. It is a renewable fuel that offers significant environmental benefits.

Multiple benefits

This new technology not only benefits our customers by converting low cost waste oils (like used cooking oil) into this high grade usable fuel, but also for the environment as it transforms a usually hard to dispose of byproduct into a sustainable clean product.

It is also important to highlight that the technology does not use vegetable oil, which is in high demand for global food production. “It is these differences that make this technology a really valuable, attractive and sustainable option for our customers and being recognised in this way is a great achievement for everyone involved.” said Michael Winter, Technology Manager.

Environmental potential

Reactive Distillation for Biodiesel Production is not only an efficient and economical process but also has the potential to have a major impact in decreasing greenhouse gas emissions – benefitting society and the planet as a whole – and making it a worthy winner of IChemE’s sustainability technology prize.

Johnson Matthey Davy Technologies develops chemical process technologies and licenses them to customers in the oil, gas and petrochemical industries.
