New Papworth Hospital will take part in Open Doors 2017 – which is delivered by Build UK in partnership with CITB.
Open Doors takes place from today (Monday 27th March) until Saturday 1st April, and New Papworth Hospital will open for visitors on Tuesday 28th March and Friday 31st March.
The event provides young people with behind the scenes access to some of the most prestigious construction projects across the UK.
The event is also supported by the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) and Considerate Contractors Scheme (CCS).
The New Papworth Hospital will be a state-of-the-art, purpose-built hospital specialising in cardiothoracic medicine on the world-class Cambridge Biomedical Campus (CBC).
Once on site, visitors will find out exactly what it takes to build modern healthcare facilities. They will then be encouraged to find out more about potential careers in construction at the industry’s careers website – Go Construct.
James McKenzie-Boyle, Community Investment Manager, from Skanska, said: “We are delighted to be involved in Open Doors once again and particularly excited to open New Papworth Hospital to the local people of Cambridge. It is a great platform for us to showcase the hard work of the team that goes into creating these iconic buildings.”
Janette Welton-Pai, CITB Partnerships Manager, said: “We encourage young people of all backgrounds to get down to an Open Doors site and take the first step on the road to a successful career in construction.
“According to our latest research, about 180,000 new jobs will be up for grabs in construction over the next five years, due to projects like this in the pipeline.
“Open Doors is a fantastic way for people to see just how rewarding a career in the industry can be.”
Suzannah Nichol, Build UK Chief Executive, said: “If you’re looking for a career which is diverse and challenging, you should look no further than construction. My journey to becoming an engineer and now working on behalf of industry started from a site visit, and Open Doors enables you to take a closer look at some of the UK’s most exciting projects, and experience for yourself what makes construction such a fantastic place to work.”
