Laurence Evans has been promoted from his former position of Senior Associate at the firm’s office in Newmarket Road.
Laurence originally joined the firm as a trainee in 2006. He now advises private and public sector clients on a wide range of corporate matters, from company acquisitions and disposals to mergers, collaborations and group re-organisations. His areas of expertise also include advising on company start-ups, corporate governance, investments and funding agreements.
Managing Partner Colin Jones said: “Throughout his career, Laurence has consistently impressed us with his legal expertise, excellent client care, and in winning the firm new business. In the end, it was an easy decision for the board: he thoroughly deserves this role.”
The move takes the number of Partners working across Hewitsons’ offices in Cambridge, London, Milton Keynes and Northampton to 46. Many of these also began as Hewitsons trainees.
Laurence’s career progression has been unusual in that he chose to move into the legal profession while working as a case worker for the Charity Commission.
There, his role had often involved giving legal advice, which inspired him to study law at night school while still in full-time employment.
After qualifying, he landed his two-year traineeship at Hewitsons. During this period, he spent time gaining experience across the firm’s many specialist teams, as do all Hewitsons trainees.
Laurence said: “When I first started with Hewitsons as trainee, it seemed a foregone conclusion that I’d work in charity law, but as it happened it was just before the credit crunch and things were extremely busy in the corporate side. I got thrown into the deep end quite quickly and loved it. Without that opportunity to try different things early on, I might never have got to where I am now.
“I’m delighted to have progressed to the level of Partner and look forward to the additional responsibility this appointment brings.”
