New virtual project to improve health and wellbeing through physical activity sessions

Living Sport has teamed up with the Papworth Trust to deliver a supported programme of physical activity and mindfulness to individuals who are currently receiving support through the Department for Work and Pension's Work and Health Programme. Run by the Papworth Trust, the Work and Health Programme is designed to improve employment outcomes for people with health conditions or disabilities.

Online physical activity sessions

Participants will join a 12-week programme of online physical activity sessions run by Community Interest Company Able2B with the inclusion of mindfulness techniques thanks to Illuminate, a local not-for-profit organisation specialising in mental health coaching for the unemployed.

Creating inclusive and accessible opportunities for disabled people and people with long term conditions in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough is a key strategic aim of Living Sport. The pandemic has disproportionately affected the physical and mental wellbeing of this group. The new project will work with participants to support them to improve their activity levels, feelings of isolation and mental health.

Living Sport Project Manager, Rebecca Evans, said, "This is an exciting new project for Living Sport and involves us working with a number of partners from different backgrounds to give the participants a new holistic approach and aims to increase their health and wellbeing using physical activity and mindfulness in a targeted way."

About Papworth Trust
Papworth Trust is a leading disability charity that supports thousands of people, their families and carers. Papworth Trust deliver the Work and Health Programme and their data suggests a major barrier to engagement by participants is mental health. Over 48% of their active caseload have self-declared mental health issues for anxiety and depression. A growing proportion of their customer base are spending more time at home, are becoming less active and feel less inclination to go out.
