Night image of new port wins photography competition

A photograph of the dockside cranes at the new London Gateway Port has come tops in the ICE East of England annual 'This is Civil Engineering' photography competition.

The photograph 'London Gateway by Night' was taken by Andrew Bowen, the Engineering Director of the project. He wins £50 for the best image from within the East of England. There was a separate prize of £50 for the best image from elsewhere and this was won by Barry White with his stunning picture of the Wadi Tiwi on the Quriyat to Sur road in Oman (below).

The competition has been running since 2008 with the aim of finding images that can be used to illustrate what civil engineering is about.

It is not a competiton about photographic skills. However, a professional photographer is always included in the judging. This year it was Alan Bennett of Media Image Solutions who said Andrew's picture was a worthy winner :"The use of low angle camera position and a diagonal composition makes this a very strong image. Excellent technical skills to capture with available light and the rain just adding a touch more drama in the form of mist and reflections."
