Nujira raises the bar with 200th Envelope Tracking patent

Cambridge, UK and Barcelona, Spain Nujira Ltd, the world leader in Envelope Tracking (ET) technology, has celebrated the opening of the 2013 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona by announcing that it has passed the 200 patent mark. Nujira has the most extensive ET IPR portfolio in the industry and this latest milestone demonstrates Nujira’s continuing innovation in developing ET for use in modern digital communications.

Intellectual Property assets are key to becoming the 800lb gorilla of the ET market

Highlighting the company’s unrivalled capabilities in ET technology, Nujira’s most recent patents go beyond current ET implementations to cover next-generation, higher bandwidth architectures that are required for future handset capabilities such as Carrier Aggregation, MIMO, and LTE-Advanced. The innovations have resulted from Nujira’s development of next-generation products.

Nujira’s IP assets are set to become key as ET is adopted across the smartphone industry in 2013. Nujira is already engaged in licensing discussions with tier one handset OEMs relating to its ET IP portfolio.

Nujira’s patents cover not only the core technical breakthroughs that underpin the company’s high bandwidth, low noise, high efficiency Coolteq® ET modulator ICs, but thousands of separate claims, covering all aspects of ET systems and components. These include system architectures, timing alignment, linearization with or without Digital Pre Distortion (DPD), PA performance enhancement, system optimization, test & measurement, and production-line calibration techniques.

“With more than 200 patents now filed, granted or in process, we have reinforced our position as the dominant holder of IPR for Envelope Tracking and the acknowledged thought leader of the industry,” commented Tim Haynes, CEO of Nujira. “We take our patents very seriously, as anyone who talks to us will know. Patent protection has been a key part of our strategy for the last 10 years, and we believe it will be a key weapon in determining who will be the 800lb gorilla in the ET market.

“In today’s business environment, just having an IC is not sufficient, and is not a winning strategy. The combination of a world-class R&D team, a compelling product roadmap, and a well thought-out IP strategy will deliver us leading market share and impressive margins, as already demonstrated by others in the wireless industry.”

Notes

1. Nujira’s patented High Accuracy Tracking™ (HAT) architecture combines high efficiency switch mode power supply technology with high bandwidth linear elements, and has been proven from power levels of 0.5W to 10,000W and beyond.  The HAT architecture is at the heart of all of Nujira’s products for basestation, digital TV and mobile handset applications, giving the company a continuity of patent coverage since 2003. Nujira’s baseband-driven system approach has now been adopted as the de facto standard for ET in handsets, and is at the core of standardization activities from both the MIPI Alliance and the OpenET Alliance.

2. Nujira is currently engaged with 16 major smartphone chipset suppliers to embed its ET technology into their reference platforms and expects its Coolteq.L technology to be designed into 4G smartphones in 2013.

About Nujira

Nujira’s mission is to dramatically improve the energy efficiency of transmitters for 3G and 4G handsets, base stations and TV broadcast applications by reducing the amount of waste energy dissipated as heat in the RF Power Amplifier circuit.

Nujira’s patented Coolteq® Modulator technology dynamically controls the power supply to the circuit in line with the amplitude of the signal, enabling the creation of highly efficient RF Power Amplifiers. Today Coolteq technology powers the industry’s most energy efficient and highest performing 4G base stations and TV broadcast transmitters. Nujira is now applying the same energy efficient technology to smartphones and other portable wireless devices.

A fabless semiconductor company located in Cambridge, UK, with design centres in Cambridge and Edinburgh, Nujira is enabling the design of cost-effective multi-mode, multi-band handsets that deliver faster data rates, longer battery life, and better coverage.
