Croft Management Centre has worked with the public sector for many years and has provided both accredited and non accredited training for operational and clinical managers across a range of care settings. The company says: "We developed a series of training courses and programmes to support NHS and care sector organisations and in particular, the management teams. This led to management certificate and diploma programmes accredited by the Chartered Management Institule (CMI) and the Institute for Leadership and Management (ILM) for those that wanted their training investment nationally recognised.
"Although the programmes added, and still add real value to the participating organisations, there has been a drive for a more flexible approach. The appraisal and performance review process has identified training needs for individuals but not necessarily a full certificated programme. The challenge for Croft Management Centre was to design a process whereby individuals could build a 'passport' of training that would easily convert to a certificate or diploma in management and leadership over time (up to two years). The Croft 'Development Passport' was introduced in late 2013 and piloted with two client Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) and proved to be highly valuable and totally flexible.
"Many of the modules within the Development Passport meet the criteria for accreditation and individuals have the option to undertake a work based assignment to have the module accredited. As they build their passport portfolio they can convert the training to a full certificate or diploma in management and leadership via the assessed work based assignments. The real power of the Development Passport programme is firstly its flexibility and also the impact of training on the quality and delivery of services to the client group. Outcomes are demonstrable in the changes and improvements made and then written up as an assignment.
"For those not requiring an accredited approach, then the modules within Development Passport fully underpin the appraisal process and personal development plans. This again demonstrates to client organisations the total flexibility of the approach. Modules are interwoven with the needs, practices and values of each organisation whilst meeting the criteria for accreditation. Coaching, mentoring, e-learning and social media are also utilised to make training and development accessable and as flexible as possible.
