A plastic that sucks carbon dioxide out of the air

The field of porous adsorbents has become especially popular owing to the increase in energy consumption and the push for alternative technologies involving the capture of gases. Porous Organic Polymers (POPs) are particularly exciting because of improved environmental performance, weight and potential cost. In fact, AYRSORB™ P151 can pull carbon dioxide directly out of the air.

But until now, these martials were impossible to scale and had huge costs owing to expensive manufacturing procedures. These problems were solved by framergy with the launch of AYRSORB™ P151as a uniform product available to public.

In September 2018, framergy, Inc., in collaboration with Texas A&M University (TAMU), made their newest adsorbent, AYRSORB™ P151, available to the public through STREM Chemicals, recording its first sale in the same month.  framergy is best known as the first Metal Organic Framework company.  AYRSORB™ P151 is a Porous Organic Polymer, or POP, based on designs from Dr. Hongcai Joe Zhou at TAMU. This marks the first known sale of this class of materials.

AYRSORB™ P151 was designed by the Zhou Group and published as PPN-151-DETA.   The formulation is based on porous organic resins that have been loaded with liquid amine, diethylenetriamine (DETA). The effect of this patented amine loading of a POP is the creation of a solid, light weight material which has a huge affinity for carbon dioxide.  The adsorbent demonstrated shocking carbon dioxide uptake at a wide range of pressures, including recording the highest carbon dioxide uptake of any solid sorbent (21 wt%). When left exposed to air, the material collects carbon dioxide at levels lower than 400 parts per million (PPM), making it the ideal candidate to process atmospheric carbon dioxide in a burgeoning sector called direct air capture.

As a sub-awardee to TAMU under a Department of Energy (DOE) National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL), framergy was able to demonstrate kilogram level of production of AYRSORB™ P151. The DOE grant was made to identify and integrate new materials for carbon capture technology being piloted at US electricity generation facilities. These sorbents are capable of capturing 90 percent of carbon dioxide from low concentration flue gas while reducing the energy required for carbon capture by up to 75 percent of the state of the art. Gregory Day, a scientist in the Zhou Group explained the product as being “the next step in flue gas capture sorbents, giving efficient capture of high purity CO2 at an affordable price.”

This breakthrough removes key obstacles to energy and pollution reform and has major implications for the fossil fuel sector searching for cost-effective gas separations.   According to company Chief Operating Officer, Ray Ozdemir, “Scientists and engineers can now inexpensively buy AYRSORB™ P151 for CO2 testing or any of the endless applications POPs are tested for.”  The Company is also using the materials for novel rebreather systems which can be equipped in submarines and space crafts.
