This symposium is considered to be the premier international forum for the exchange of information on state-of-the-art research in antennas, electromagnetic wave propagation, radio science, and electromagnetic engineering, attracting over 1500 attendees from industry and academia.
Dr Marcus Walden (pictured), a Senior Technology Consultant at Plextek Consulting will present two technical papers as part of a packed technical programme covering a vast range of state-of-the-art research areas in the field of antennas and propagation.
Dr Walden’s first paper “A Ku-Band, low sidelobe waveguide array employing radiating T-junctions”, discusses the development of the latest N5S antenna for the Blighter 400-series radar. The new antenna design uses a corporate feed structure that is physically short and provides increased gain and reduced elevation beamwidth while maintaining low sidelobe levels. The N5S benefits the Blighter system by providing extended radar coverage up to 15 km over flat terrain. It complements the existing M10S and W20S antennas, resulting in a modular radar system that enables the user to configure the system according to their surveillance application and local terrain.
The second paper “A wideband, 5-50+ GHz tapered-slot antenna for use in handheld test equipment”, presents the design of a wideband printed antenna that is both lightweight and cost-effective. Plextek has developed the wideband ‘Vivaldi’ antenna as a replacement for a heavy and costly waveguide horn in a piece of handheld test equipment. The antenna’s wide frequency coverage enables it to be exploited for other applications including test and measurement, radar and communications.
Plextek designed both antennas using SEMCAD X, one of the most advanced 3D full-wave electromagnetic and thermal simulation software packages on the market today. Key measurement and simulation results that show very good agreement will be discussed in more detail in the technical papers.
