Pre-Christmas events attract families to Cambridge this weekend

Cambridge is really good at creating a festive atmosphere in the lead-up to Christmas, and this year is no exception. Two events take place this weekend in different parts of the city: Mill Road Winter Fair on Saturday (December 5th) and a new event, Mitcham's and Merrier, on Sunday (6th) at Mitcham's Corner.

The well-established Mill Road Winter Fair celebrates the quirky community spirit and multiculturalism that make this road so special.  Always held on the first Saturday in December (10.30am - 4.30pm), it’s an important event in the seasonal calendar – bringing many thousands of people to the area, raising the profile of Mill Road, increasing awareness of its many and diverse independent businesses and community groups and generally providing a colourful and fun-filled time for visitors.  With the road closed between East Road and Coleridge Road, visitors to the fair can stroll along the street and see the amazing variety of what is on offer.

This year on Sunday, for the first time, Mitcham's and Merrier sees a Christmas Market, Light Switch On and launch of this year’s Mitcham’s Models programme, all taking place at the back of the Boathouse Pub on Chesterton Road from 12 noon until 5pm. The event is expected to attract more than 35 stalls, with music supplied care of ‘Sounds around the Corner’ and featuring local talented musicians.

Radmore Farm Shop will be launching its delivery scheme and supplying all things Christmassy.  Barclays Bank has kindly offered its car park and is an ongoing partner, supporting the Traders Association. The Boathouse and local brewery, Greene King, have been equally supportive in collecting and contributing to the Festive Lights collection.

Paddy Mannion is about to launch the second Mitcham’s Models programme, but this year it is surrounded by words – so each body part of the mannequins located around Mitcham's Corner will be decorated with poetry from local poets.

There’ll be lots of food available on the day too, ranging from traditional Sunday Lunch at The Boathouse; South African and Schnitzels from street food vans, to Dutch pancakes from the Dutch Bike Company and more...so something for everyone! Provenance Kitchen will be popping up outside Thirsty for those hard core people that wish to stay on.

Special guest is BBC Radio Cambridgeshire presenterJeremy Sallis, along with the Deputy Mayor, Cllr. Jeremy Benstead – who will both saying a few words before the lights are switched on at 4pm.
