President makes Peterborough detour to receive book

The President of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Professor David Balmforth made a detour to Peterborough last Thursday to receive a special book.

Professor Balmforth was travelling with his wife Gillian, also an engineer, to an official visit to Ipswich, due to begin Friday. His impromptu stop was by invitation of the town’s retired Head of Engineering Services Sarfraz Khan.

Mr Khan wanted to present the Institution with a book by local author Dr Betty Chambers entitled ‘Victorian Peterborough and Mr Mayor’. The book includes information about Victorian civil engineer John Addy who masterminded Peterborough’s sewage system. The book will be placed in the Institution’s library at its Westminster headquarters.
