RealVNC helps to keep Cook Islands connected

Telecom Cook Islands, the largest provider of fixed phone, mobile and broadband services to the Cook Islands, has deployed VNC® with an Enterprise license to provide remote IT support and home working.

With offices on 11 of the 15 remote South Pacific islands, spread over 2.2 million square kilometres of ocean, RealVNC’s software has resulted in a significant reduction in IT downtime, greater staff productivity and increased levels of service to Telecom Cook Island customers.

Based at the company’s headquarters on the Islands’ capital Rarotonga, the IT team required a solution that would allow them to access distant workstations to provide IT support, maintenance and upgrading.  It was important that the solution was not only easy to deploy, but also provided cross-platform support and robust security for the range of different platforms and operating systems used throughout the organisation, as well as for people working from home.

With VNC deployed IT staff can now resolve internal helpdesk issues immediately without leaving their desks whilst Network Engineers can remotely access the central telecommunications equipment, responsible for the connecting all phone calls to and from the Cook Islands, to perform
maintenance. The VNC address book is used to securely store login details for connections, removing the lengthy process of entering details each time a remote access session is initiated, while staff can also view and use files and information stored on their work computer from home.

“Our IT staff greatly value VNC as it’s easy to setup and use, while allowing them to provide remote support regardless of location. The time savings generated by VNC are increasing staff productivity and morale, enabling them to provide a greater service to our customers,” said Adam Tuatai, Systems Administrator, Telecom Cook Islands.

Designed and built by the original inventors, VNC allows one computer to take control of another computer from anywhere in the world, with cross-platform support for the widest range of operating systems, including Windows, Mac and UNIX.  VNC can be licensed in three ways as
Enterprise, Personal and Free to suit individual requirements.  The software comprises a VNC Server application on the machine to be controlled and a VNC Viewer component on the controlling machine. With no agents or centralized servers required, VNC enables trouble-free installation and use.
