Report proposes shared commercial waste service to increase market share

Cambridge City and South Cambridgeshire District councillors are set to consider joining forces for a shared commercial waste service to grow the business.

A report to be considered at the city council’s Environment Scrutiny Committee on 6 October outlines how the two councils working together could improve the service for recycling customers’ business waste and become more competitive to gain market share.

The report recommends preparing a detailed implementation plan for the shared service, which would increase income and provide a better, more flexible service for recycling trade waste from small and medium-sized businesses in particular.

The proposed shared service will be part of the Single Shared Waste Service based at the depot in Waterbeach.

The more efficient service to customers in the two districts would be provided through introducing new vehicle routes as well as lowering operation and management costs.

It is expected that a shared service will also be more commercially competitive by offering new sales opportunities across a wider area, and providing a joined-up service to customers with multiple sites across the two districts.

The report will also be considered at South Cambridgeshire District Council’s Cabinet meeting on 12 November.

Cllr Peter Roberts, Executive Councillor for Environment and Waste at Cambridge City Council, said: “By joining forces with our neighbours, we can improve the already excellent commercial waste service we provide for a wide range of businesses. In addition this way of working is an important way that we can reduce the council’s costs, while continuing to provide the frontline services residents and customers expect from us.”

If councillors agree to the proposals a detailed project delivery plan will be drawn up and the shared service could become fully operational by the end of March 2016.
