Melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine) is a hormone found in humans, as well as animals and plants. It is part of the system that regulates sleep-wake cycles and is also considered an antioxidant. Production of Melatonin by the brain’s pineal gland peaks at night.
The Salimetrics research team developed rabbit monoclonals in partnership with Epitomics Inc., who provided their knowledge and patented methodologies. The partnership resulted in creation of extremely sensitive and specific monoclonal antibodies used in the design of the new melatonin assay.
“Measuring melatonin in saliva can benefit researchers by aiding studies that examine topics such as sleep regulation,” said Douglas Granger, PhD, Institute for Interdisciplinary Salivary Bioscience Research, School of Social Ecology Faculty, UC Irvine, California and Salimetrics Founder and Chief Scientific and Strategy Advisor. “To make the assay even more user friendly,” he added, “saliva does not need to be pre-treated ”
