Cambridge Rugby Club would be in line for a grant of £200,000 towards the total cost of improving facilities at its Grantchester Road ground. The project would see six new changing rooms, new toilets and showers, changing rooms for officials, a gym, a physiotherapy suite, a laundry store and an office built.
North Cambridge Academy on Arbury Road would be granted £125,000 towards the total cost of building four new floodlit tennis courts with additional markings for netball.
The new facilities would all be available for use by the public and by local clubs and community organisations. The grants would be funded by S106 contributions from developers specifically earmarked for outdoor sports.
The two projects were previously allocated provisional funding in 2015, but were not at the time ready to be delivered. The schemes now have the necessary planning approvals and the full funding in place to begin, pending these awards.
Outdoor Sports S106 funding is just one of the categories of S106 developer contributions that the council has been able to collect to mitigate the impact of housing development in Cambridge.
Cllr Richard Johnson, Executive Councillor for Communities, said: “Once completed, these projects will provide additional much-needed sports facilities that local groups and people can use.
“As the city grows it is important that new facilities such as these are developed to meet the demand from residents for modern sports facilities. While the council provides many excellent sporting venues such as swimming pools, tennis courts and basketball courts, it is important that we also work with other providers to help them complete projects to develop their facilities that will also benefit the whole community.”
