The rise and rise of online video content

An Ofcom report says online time is growing, as is smartphone use. The challenge for companies is how to get in front of those eyes, says the team at Cambridge TV.

They write:

People say they spend 24 hours a week online - double the 12 hours a week they reported in 2007 - and a chunk of that time is on a smartphone. The figures from the 2018 Ofcom Communications Market Report shouldn't surprise many people.

Have you noticed how many people are glued to their smartphones - in cafes, on public transport, even in the supermarket?

And yet attention spans seem to have shortened. If something doesn't grab us, we click on to something else.

So how do businesses attract attention? It would seem that content is still king, and we've noticed that video content seems to be outstripping still images in terms of having an impact, if our social media channels are anything to go by.

We've also noticed the number of videos that are suddenly appearing on LinkedIn, some self shot, some professionally made, offering everything from snapshots of conferences through to first person chats. LinkedIn says that Company Page videos, which were enabled last year, are five times more likely to start a conversation, as their strength is in showing rather than telling. A number of companies have also taken up the option of videos as sponsored content, which appear in LinkedIn users news feed.

As ever, the audience of these videos want to be entertained but they also want to learn something new, they want to be inspired, and they want to hear stories - whether these are business journeys, success stories or personal hobbies.

Even thought we are still broadcasting content on a Sunday evening on TV's channel 7, YouTube content is working extremely well for us.

We've been out filming a range of things - from professionals healing sick animals  to sports such as downhill mountain biking  and archery.

If you want to learn how to create your own video content, our Saturday course is a great place to start. See you on Saturday 26 January! And if you'd like to see video content, here's the link!
