Cyclists from across the city and beyond will be meeting at Lammas Land at 11am on Saturday 22 September for a short ride through the city centre and back for a mini-festival with cargo bike traders and specialists.
Taking place just a couple of weeks after the government announced a £2 million package of funding to support the uptake of e-cargo bikes, the Cargo Carnival will showcase some of many different things that can be carried by cycle, helping to reduce carbon emissions, air pollution and congestion in the UK’s cities.
In a government statement, Jesse Norman, Minister for Low Emission Vehicles, said that cargo bikes ‘have the potential to play an important role in the zero-emission future of this country’ and that encouraging their use would ‘help to ensure that Britain leads the way in the development and deployment of the technologies of the future’.
Local cargobike specialists Outspoken Cycles and Power to the Pedal are supporting the event, Hugh Salt, from the city’s longest-trading cargo cycle retailer, The School Run Centre, will be there with a Dutch trike that cooks pancakes.
The Greater Cambridge Partnership, which is also supporting the carnival, will have a stall at the event to champion the benefits of sustainable travel as part of its aims to reduce congestion on our roads.
There will also be cargo cycles selling bread, beer, coffee and ice cream, and bikes carrying everything from children and camping equipment to puppies and beehives.
Camcycle would like to encourage anyone who carries anything on a cycle to come along with loaded bags, baskets, trailers and panniers to show the city of Cambridge the power of non-motorised transport.
There will be prizes on offer for categories including ‘best-decorated cycle’ and ‘most unusual cargo’ and a family-friendly festival atmosphere on Lammas Land from 11am – 2pm.
The Cargo Carnival is part of the 2018 Cambridge Festival of Cycling, a month-long series of events to celebrate the city’s cycling culture.
