Running footballer street projection and film kick off City FC’s new era

If you thought you saw a larger than life footballer running along the route between Milton Road and Histon Road in Cambridge over the last few evenings, fear not, your eyes were not deceiving you....

The footballer was in fact an animation, projected from a specially designed ‘Light Rider’ bike onto buildings as he ran. Called Making the Move, the initiative was part of the Cambridge KickstART project, which celebrates Cambridge City Football Club as it enters a new era.

Beginning at Mitcham's Corner and ending at Histon Football Club, the moving digital projection commemorated the club’s past and welcomed its future move from shared grounds at Histon Football Club to a proposed new stadium in Sawston.

Briefly illuminating homes and businesses along the way, the animation included drawings by children from Milton Road primary school, City’s mascot Lily the Panda, and references to the evolution of City’s former Milton Road site - from ancient gravel pit to football ground to new housing development.

City Chairman Kevin Satchell said: “The project is a great chance for City supporters and the local community to look back at the history of our former ground.  Whilst everyone connected with the club is looking forward to hopefully moving to our new site at Sawston, the memories of the club being at Milton Road will last forever.  I hope everyone will embrace this project which showcases the rich tradition and history of Cambridge City Football Club.”

The project’s next stage will see the animation intertwined with sound bites captured at the last Milton Road match to create the short film, Service | Movement | Desire. Celebrating the heritage of Cambridge City FC, the film will be shown as part of Cambridge University’s Curating Cambridge and The Festival of Ideas at the Arts Picturehouse on Sunday October 26 at 5.20pm. A pre-screening reception will be held for supporters – they can gather together to share stories and celebrate their favourite club.

Both projects are creations of public artist Zoё Chamberlain, in collaboration with animator James Conan Baker, Colour Films and ADeC.

Zoe said: “Making the Move and the film screening are very exciting projects – together, they provide a wonderful opportunity for Cambridge City fans and the Cambridge community to celebrate the team – both its heritage and the next chapter in its journey. I am really lucky to collaborate with some brilliant young home-grown talent such as animator James Conan-Baker and Colour Films, to deliver the first of the artists’ commissions in the KicksART series.”

Making The Move and the short film also marks the construction of more than 100 new homes on the site of the Milton Road football ground. Award-winning house builders Crest Nicholson are funding the broader KickstART project to help foster community pride and enhance a sense of place.

Peter Diffley, Managing Director, Crest Nicholson Eastern, commented: “We are committed to having a positive impact within the communities in which we develop and are therefore delighted to be sponsoring the KickstART project. KickstART plays a valuable role in fostering civic pride in the area and this latest initiative, in the form of a short film, is a lovely way of commemorating the club’s history in the area as well as welcoming in a new era both for the club and for Crest Nicholson.”

About Cambridge City Football Club

Cambridge City Football Club is the oldest football club in Cambridge. Formed in 1908, its home for 91 years was at the City Ground, in Milton Road.  In 2005, the ground was sold for housing and after several extensions, the lease to the ground expired in 2013, meaning the club had to vacate the site in April of that year.

Since leaving Milton Road, the club is hopeful that they can move to a brand new stadium in Sawston, south of Cambridge.  This was unanimously approved by South Cambridgeshire District Council in June, and is currently waiting to be endorsed by the secretary of state for Communities and Local Government, Rt Hon Eric Pickles MP. In the interim, City currently groundshare at Histon FC and play in the Southern League, the seventh tier of the national football pyramid system.
