Sagentia presents on the use of mobile medical apps at Medical Informatics World 2014

At Medical Informatics World 2014, Sagentia’s Dr David Pettigrew will lead a discussion focused on how increasing patient participation and collaboration can achieve greater health benefits and outcomes.

Dr Pettigrew will also deliver a presentation at the event today, demonstrating how connected health and Mobile Medical Apps can be used to enhance remote patient monitoring.

Connected health is an evolution from existing delivery models such as telehealth and telemedicine services, where the electronic transmission of patient information from one location to another is supplemented by intelligent sensors and algorithms, which provide context-aware and actionable information to the patient, payer or clinician. For example, smartphones and Mobile Medical Apps are now offering a host of new healthcare possibilities that could revolutionize the way that healthcare systems and devices are controlled, monitored and gather and process data.

In his presentation, Dr Pettigrew will provide a ‘roadmap’ for developing new connected health systems incorporating Mobile Medical Apps, from initial concept through to final product. He will highlight if and how a smartphone app can be a medical device, the regulatory and technical challenges involved and how to maximise success.

Dr Pettigrew, Head of Connected Health, comments: “At a time of significant budgetary constraint, healthcare providers must find new ways to reduce costs and increase the efficiency and quality of care. Enabling remote patient monitoring to ensure underlying health issues are properly addressed and encourage lifestyle improvements drives reductions in the number of people visiting healthcare providers and allows patients to take more ownership of their wellbeing. Technology is proving a key enabler in realizing these aims and connected health breakthroughs such as medically regulated smartphone apps could have an important impact.”

Sagentia’s participation in the event is due to its growing involvement in connected health. The company is experiencing increased interest from customers wanting strategic advice on technological advances in the field and to develop smartphone-connected medical devices and Mobile Medical Apps. In particular, Sagentia is currently supporting clients to develop innovative sensing solutions for patient monitoring, custom wireless solutions for Mobile Medical Apps and technologies for extracting and aggregating data to provide meaningful context-aware results to the user.
