Salimetrics begin shipping newly developed Salivary Melatonin Assay

Salimetrics' new salivary melatonin immunoassay promises precise and accurate results in less time by utilizing an exclusive antibody engineered by Salimetrics. The propriety format allows melatonin assay results in four hours with a single sample and one wash step. It offers the most time efficient, easiest to use protocol, aiding studies that examine topics such as sleep regulation, insomnia, and the sleep-wake cycle.

Here is the Full Overview and Kit Insert

The new melatonin assay has sub picogram/ml.analytical sensitivity with excellent precision and accuracy.

“Other commercially available melatonin ELISA methodologies require approximately 24 hours with several washes and further steps involving reagent additions,” said Jon Peterson, Ph.D., FACB, Salimetrics principal scientist. .”The new format will provide our customers with a user-friendly, accurate, precise and robust salivary diagnostic product.”

Melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine) is a hormone found in humans, as well as animals and plants.  It is part of the system that regulates sleep-wake cycles and is also considered an antioxidant.  Production of melatonin by the brain’s pineal gland peaks at night.

The Salimetrics research team developed rabbit monoclonals in partnership with Epitomics Inc., who provided their knowledge and patented methodologies.  The partnership resulted in creation of extremely sensitive and specific monoclonal antibodies used in the design of the new melatonin assay.

“Measuring melatonin in saliva can benefit researchers by aiding studies that examine topics such as sleep regulation,” said Douglas Granger, Ph.D., Director of the Center for Interdisciplinary Salivary Bioscience Research at the Johns Hopkins University and Salimetrics Founder and Chief Scientific and Strategy Advisor.  “To make the assay even more user friendly,” he added, “saliva does not need to be pre-treated. ”

The salivary melatonin assay kit, now available through Salimetrics, is the latest assay in a growing list of reliable salivary biomarkers for research and diagnostic use. Salimetrics assays are known for their consistent performance characteristics and precise results.  Salimetrics also provides analysis for more than two dozen salivary biomarkers in the Salimetrics Lab for researchers without access to equipment needed to run their salivary assays.
