Cortisol (hydrocortisone, Compound F) is the major glucocorticoid produced in the adrenal cortex. It plays an important role in the stress response and several endocrine disorders. Analysis of Cortisol in hair provides a means to measure long-term secretion on the hormone.
Retrospective reflection of elevated Cortisol concentrations are used in several areas of psychology research, such as chronic stress. The growth rate of hair is about 1cm per month, allowing assessment of Cortisol.
