Chris Hale, Senior Staff Scientist, comments: "The goal of the Laboratory Technician Apprentice programme is to help us 'grow our own' talent. We want to participate in developing and training a talent pipeline, that will make working for us attractive to bright individuals and their networks."

The apprenticeship will include hands-on experience. The two-year Laboratory Technician Apprenticeship programme will be an exciting opportunity for Claire to join the Sanger's Infection Genomics Team, gaining practical experience in a working laboratory and developing a sound understanding of host-pathogen interactions while supporting scientists with their investigations.

And she will also gain a qualification.Cambridge Regional College (CRC) is the apprenticeship provider and will be delivering the Laboratory Technician Advanced Apprenticeship. During the apprenticeship Claire will achieve:

  •     Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Laboratory and Associated Technical Activities
  •     BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Applied Science

The Sanger will be working closely with CRC to help Claire with her development and maximise her learning and achievements.

Claire expressed an interest in gene editing of DNA in mice as well as learning techniques to study host interactions with pathogens. In her spare time she enjoys cooking, baking, playing musical instruments (piano and flute) and long distance running.

This is an exciting time both for the Institute and its new apprentice - welcome on board Claire!
