Session overview
One of the major challenges faced by organisations pertains to their ability to select and execute on the right ideas among the many that come under their product portfolio radar. Examples abound with one very well-known and extremely characteristic: Xerox was able to come across the first user interface for computers, but it was Steve Jobs' Apple that made a name out of it. So what makes some organisations select and focus on the successful ideas and some others miss out on great opportunities?
This brief session aims to offer key steps that ensure an effective selection process. Such a selection process bridges the organisational strategic vision with the underlying execution capabilities and achieves the best portfolio of innovation projects. We will outline the basic building blocks of this process with the use of well established managerial frameworks that have been applied across various industries.
Faculty background
Professor Stelios Kavadias serves as an Associate Editor for Management Science's Entrepreneurship and Innovation department, and as the Department Editor for the R&D, New Product Development and Project Management department of Production and Operations Management. At Georgia Tech's Huang Executive Education Center he regularly contributed to open enrolment and custom executive programmes on innovation and project management, and was the Academic Director of their GE Energy PLMP programme.
