If you require typhoid for travel there is a current national shortage of the vaccine. The Travel Clinic can offer typhoid combined with hepatitis A but this cannot be given if you have already received two doses of hepatitis A vaccination within the last 20 years or have had a hepatitis A in the last six months.
Please be aware that your GP may offer you a single hepatitis A vaccination and advise you to go to The Travel Clinic for a typhoid vaccination. Unfortunately the clinic does not have a current supply of single typhoid vaccinations but could in this instance offer the combined vaccination if the hepatitis A is not given at the GP, so covering you for both diseases.
Typhoid is a disease spread by contaminated food and water and is common in many developing countries around the world. It has a 20% fatality rate in those that develop complications (around 10-15%) but if treated promptly by antibiotics this reduces to less than 1%. Avoidance of the disease is vitally important, this includes eating well cooked, piping hot food which kills the disease, observing good hand hygiene before eating and drinking, drinking bottled water or using water purification measures before drinking and avoiding ice cubes and salads which could be washed in contaminated water and eat only fruit which can be peeled.
Any fever, headache, diarrhoea, constipation, aches and pains including abdominal pain should be investigated promptly by a doctor or your GP.
