SonoSite S-Nerve™ enables day surgery in Chichester

St Richard’s Hospital – part of the Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust – is taking advantage of the image quality and user-friendly design of SonoSite’s S-Nerve™ point of care ultrasound system to introduce regional nerve blocks for hand day surgery. Consultant Anaesthetist Dr Sharon Avery explained: “We have been using SonoSite ultrasound systems in the Anaesthetics Department for several years, mainly for vascular access, and were interested in introducing ultrasound guidance for regional nerve blocks to allow some day surgery cases to be performed without a general anaesthetic. We purchased an SNerve system to fulfil this role and, working in close conjunction with the surgical team, we are now able to offer a number of hand procedures under regional anaesthesia.”

Dr Cathryn Eitel, also a Consultant Anaesthetist in the Department, added: “The S-Nerve’s image quality and Advanced Needle Visualization software have been instrumental in the introduction of new anaesthesia services, improving both the accuracy and predictability of blocks. The system is very intuitive to use, and we are performing an increasing number of blocks – both for regional anaesthesia and analgesia – as more of our colleagues within the Department become familiar with the equipment. It’s also a good teaching tool for trainees at all levels.”
