SOS Children writes:
We have been helping people in the Philippines since 1964. Since then, we have worked with local people to support vulnerable families and children across the nation. Today, we work in eight locations throughout the country, providing long-term support for fragile families and caring for children who have no one else.
With over half a century of expertise and local knowledge, we are perfectly placed to deliver fast, effective and targeted to relief to those affected by this devastating natural disaster.
We have worked in Tacloban since 1970. Our Children's Village is located just a short journey from the centre of the city, and we have provided support to struggling families in the local community for over four decades.
With much of Tacloban still inaccessible, we are able to help from within.
Helping families at our Children's Village in Tacloban
Our Children's Village in Tacloban suffered severe damage in the storm, though all SOS families and staff are reported to be safe. Roofs were stripped from many buildings and the Village is strewn with debris. Children from our Village in Tacloban have now moved to the safe and secure shelter of SOS Children's Village Calbayog. Our colleagues in The Philippines have said,
"Our SOS Tacloban children, mothers and co-workers (relocated in Calbayog and still some in Tacloban) immediately need basic needs of food, water, medicines, clothing and beddings. Their supplies and belongings were totally washed out by the typhoon."
We are particularly concerned about 110 vulnerable families we support in the community. Their homes destroyed, many are now in desperate need of food, water and shelter. We need your help to ensure they have everything they need.
Some of the money raised in the appeal will be used to help repair our Village to make sure the children we care for have a decent home.
We are providing essential supplies to keep families safe:
- food and water.
- clothing to keep children warm in damaged buildings.
- medication to protect children and other vulnerable people from disease.
It is vital that we get these basic items to those who need them straight away. We can only do this with your support.
Help us support families affected by this devastating natural disaster.
