South Cambs elects new Council Chair and Vice-Chair

South Cambridgeshire District Council has elected a new Chair and Vice-Chair of the Council at their Annual General Meeting held yesterday on 22 May 2025.

Cllr Peter Sandford (Lib Dem, Caxton and Papworth Ward) was elected to be Chair of the Council for 2025-26 and Cllr Eileen Wilson (Lib Dem, Cottenham Ward) was elected to be Vice-Chair of the Council for the same period. Both the new Chair and Vice-Chair were elected unopposed.

In nominating Cllr Peter Sandford to be Chair, Leader of the Council, Cllr Bridget Smith, (Lib Dem, Gamlingay Ward) said:

“Peter has been a really steady and very fair Vice-Chair. He is reliable, patient and fair. Peter is a common face for people watching council meetings, attending 45 public meetings within the last year, which is not an insubstantial number. Peter understands the breadth of the work we do as a council as I know he will take the role of chair seriously and professionally as he has done as Vice-Chair.”

In nominating Cllr Eileen Wilson to be Vice-Chair, Cllr Bridget Smith said:

“Eileen is a consummate professional, a kind and compassionate voice for her residents and her breadth of experience in her working life will make her a real asset in the role. She has served on Audit and Corporate Governance, Civic Affairs, the GCP Assembly, Licensing, Scrutiny and Overview and Planning Committee – which is quite a track record and so she knows the council like the back of her hand. I have every confidence in her as an outstanding Vice-Chair.”

In the same meeting, the Council’s Cabinet for 2025-26 was announced, with the same Cabinet remaining in place:

-       Cllr Bridget Smith (Lib Dem, Gamlingay Ward) – Leader of the Council

-       Cllr Brian Milnes (Lib Dem, Sawston Ward) – Deputy Leader of the Council
