Hosted by Anglia Ruskin’s Department of Psychology, the event will feature a screening of the inspirational documentary The Stranger on the Bridge followed by a Q&A with Jonny Benjamin OBE, the man whose life was saved in January 2008.
The Stranger on the Bridge features Jonny’s search to find “Mike”, the man who dissuaded him from taking his own life by jumping off Waterloo Bridge.
Jonny, who had been diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder, went on to set up the #FindMike campaign, with the help of the charity Rethink Mental Illness, and was eventually reunited with the Good Samaritan, whose name is actually Neil Laybourn.
Viren Swami, Professor of Social Psychology at Anglia Ruskin University, said: “The film fits with the recent discussions about mental health provision in this country and shows the impact that we can all make in helping others.
“The film is all about how a simple gesture helped to save one’s man life, and how Jonny has gone on to become a mental health campaigner who has transformed the lives of so many others.”
The event, which is free to attend and open to the public, will take place in room 026 in the Lord Ashcroft Building on Anglia Ruskin’s Cambridge campus.
