There’s only one month to left until Arthur Rank Hospice Charity’s longstanding, annual fundraising event Star Shine Night Walk returns in-person, on Saturday 21 May. Open to the entire Cambridgeshire community, the Charity invites individuals, groups of friends and colleagues, and families to make the streets of Cambridge ‘glow green’ for the 10km walk around the city centre.

The ‘glow’ of excitement has already begun, with a new start and finish venue confirmed as Cambridge Rugby Union Football Club, Volac Park on Grantchester Road. Walkers can arrive from 7pm and look forward to all the energy and surprises of a carefully mapped, accessible 10km walk around the iconic views and beautiful green spaces of Cambridge.

Rick and Sue tell us why they signed up

Rick Nelms and wife Sue and family are gearing up to form ‘Team Rickety’. Rick and Sue are currently supported by the Charity’s Living Well service. Rick explains why he’s taking part:

“I am doing Star Shine Night Walk to raise money for Arthur Rank Hospice because it does so much to enhance my quality of life, and to care for my lovely wife Sue, with whom I am doing the walk, who is also my full-time carer.

The staff and volunteers are so caring and compassionate, and take the time with each individual person and their family and friends, to demystify and explain what is going on. I was diagnosed with a life-limiting condition, a rare motor neurone disease, and without the hospice’s Living Well service, that might have be a lonely and terrifying experience. Part of the reason for doing the walk (in my powerchair) is so that others can find out more about what the hospice does.

Please support us as we try to raise as much money as possible to allow the Hospice to function at maximum effectiveness.”

Colleagues and local businesses have signed up

Two of the Hospice’s own Lymphoedema specialists are also taking part, alongside teams of colleagues from local businesses such as DrinkstuffGibbs Denley Financial Services and Inspire PT Fulbourn. Many families are taking part in the walk as a way of remembering an absent loved one together, while raising much needed funds to ensure the future of the Hospice’s services.

Join in where ever you live

New for this year is the addition of a virtual option for those who live further afield or who wish to take part in the walk at a time and in a location to suit them. All participants of the in-person event and the virtual option will receive a Star Shine Night Walk event pack including a reusable event t-shirt, support with sponsorship, and treats to keep them going around the route.

Sign up today

Sign up by Wednesday 11 May at arhc.org.uk/ssnw for £19.50 (adults) and £9.50 children under 16 (on the date of the event). Arthur Rank Hospice Charity’s services are provided free of charge to those living with an advanced serious illness or other life-limiting condition, and those who need end-of-life care. It will cost £11.51 million this year to operate all of its services, with £4.44 million of this raised through donations, fundraising activities and trading. With the financial impact of the pandemic still being felt, events like Star Shine Night Walk – and the local community who support them – are more important than ever!
