Stansted in dreamland as new eco-friendly jet makes debut

Holiday-makers heading to Mexico and America from London Stansted will get to fly on one of the most advanced planes in the world.

  • Thomson Airways launch flights to Mexico and America using Boeing 787 Dreamliner
  • First Dreamliner to ever operate passenger flights from Stansted Airport
  • The jet is one of the quietest and most fuel efficient passenger planes flying today

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner, operated by Thomson Airways, launched its long-haul flying programme yesterday (Tuesday), whisking passengers off from Stansted direct to Cancun on Mexico’s Caribbean coast and Orlando-Sanford, Florida.

The UK holiday company was the first airline in Britain to operate the Dreamliner which uses industry leading technology to make it one of the world's most eco-friendly aircraft and up to 20 per cent more fuel efficient than anything else in the skies.

Mats Sigurdsson, Stansted Airport’s Commercial Director, said: “The arrival of the Thomson Airways Dreamliner at Stansted will give the millions of people living in London and the East of England the opportunity to experience an aircraft that dramatically transforms air travel and access to exciting long-haul holidays direct from their local airport. The arrival of this fantastic new jet not only opens up a host of new destinations but it also brings significant environmental benefits which is very welcome news as we continue to drive down our operational effects on the communities around the airport.”

Speaking ahead of the first flight, Mark Hall, Director of Product for Thomson and First Choice, said: “We are committed to taking customers on holiday from their local airport and we’re excited to be able to introduce long haul routes from Stansted for the first time. We were the first UK airline to take delivery of the 787 Dreamliner, which has enabled us to open up new destinations for Thomson and First Choice customers and fly them there in style. It also means our customers can have access to our portfolio of unique hotels, which they can only book through us, flying direct from Stansted Airport.”

The new Thomson flights will depart from the airport’s newly refurbished Satellite One departure area. This £8 million project forms part of the airport’s wider £260 million investment programme to improve airport facilities and services for passengers and airlines.
