Stansted flying high as September passenger numbers break records

Stansted Airport has seen its largest monthly increase in passenger numbers in over eight years* as it flew over 1.8 million passengers in September, an increase of 230,000 (+14%) compared to the corresponding month last year.

  • 14% monthly increase the largest in over eight years
  • Annual passenger total breaks through 19 million
  • 1.6 million more passengers flying from Stansted since acquired by MAG

The annual rate of growth at the UK’s fourth busiest airport has now risen to 8.4%, with over 19 million passengers passing through Stansted in the last year, the highest total since mid-2010. Over 1.6 million additional passengers have used Stansted since it was acquired by MAG in February 2013.

Growth in September has been driven by the adding of new routes such to Larnaca, Dortmund, Athens and Dundee, increased frequencies offered by airlines on key routes such as Milan, Rome, Berlin and Dublin, and passenger initiatives such as Ryanair’s recently launched business product and family friendly travel options.

Andrew Harrison, Stansted’s Managing Director, said:
“It has been a very busy summer for the airport and this achievement is testimony to the hard work of everybody here at Stansted and the ongoing success of our airline partners.

“To see 1.6 million more passengers fly from Stansted in the first 19 months of ownership by MAG and once again break through the symbolic 19 million figure is the latest milestone on the road to delivering a sustained period of growth for the airport.

“It was only five months ago that Stansted passed the 18 million passenger mark so this rapid increase in passengers is another clear demonstration of how the airport is flourishing under MAG’s ownership.

“However, we are focused on building on this success and helping support the growth ambitions of the region. We continue to work hard to provide even more choice and attract new airlines, including full service scheduled carriers, and also to deliver a wider range of destinations, including the long-haul routes that businesses across the eastern region and London value so highly.

“We also continue to make excellent progress with our £260 million investment programme to transform passenger services and facilities across the airport with the first phase of the new departure lounge now open and work to shortly commence on a new business lounge in the terminal.

“We have achieved an incredible amount in a short space of time, and there is still a lot more to do, but I’m delighted our passengers are already getting a glimpse of what the future hold for Stansted.”

*Passenger numbers in April 2011 increased by 26.2% but this was as a result of the effects of the Icelandic ash cloud closing UK airspace in April 2010.
