Steel frames now in place for Cambridge Design Partnership’s new building

Work continues on the new building developments at Cambridge Design Partnership’s headquarters in Cambridgeshire – where environmental initiatives are put in place.

This week a huge crane has been putting in place the giant steel frameworksthat will form the structure of the new building. The work started in November last year, recycling an old disused barn and developing a new complex with state-of-the-art laboratories, dedicated workshops and high tech meeting rooms. When completed later this year, the developments will add an extra 6,000ft2 of lab space and five more meeting rooms, as well as much needed office space to cater for the growing company and its continued expansion.

It is crucial to the ethos of Cambridge Design Partnership that the new building developments are environmentally considerate. A number of initiatives have been put in place to ensure this is achieved.

The company says: "Last year, we switched electricity suppliers so that our electricity is now 100% renewable (all UK sourced, mainly from wind, some hydro and biomass). The concrete from the old barn is being recycled – it has been crushed and incorporated into the foundations of the new building. We have removed the need for air-conditioning; wind catchers mounted on the double-pitched roof are used to create natural ventilation pulling fresh air through the concrete structure to cool the rooms. Overnight the same system is used to cool the concrete in preparation for the following day.

"In addition to utilising the double pitched roof to ensure that the mounted PV panels are out of sight, every attempt is being made to create an environmentally conscious building with aesthetics that blend into the South Cambridgeshire village in which we are based."
