Stephen Perse Foundation creative minds rewarded at digital photography competition

The Stephen Perse Foundation, innovators in an education dedicated to creating independent thinkers, is proud to announce that six students from the Senior School submitted work to the Cambridge Camera Club’s annual Young Photographer competition and six received highly commended and commended awards.

The following students were honoured: Katie Bearcroft, Cici Tilston, Mille Hegarty, Bethany Barnet, Izzy Pearl and Rachel Glinsman.

The Foundation embraces the ever-growing digital world and encourages students to do the same. iPads were successfully rolled out to all Senior School students and these are used alongside traditional materials to aid learning in classrooms. This dive into digital education expands to Art lessons in digital photography – it seems these may have rubbed off on some of the competition entrants!

Students dabble in digital photography as early as Year 7 when they mostly use iPads to record from still life and the school environment. In Year 8 they have a digital media project where they learn about photography as an art form and develop their understanding of digital SLR photography as part of the ‘structures’ project. This is developed further in Year 9 with an animation and film project using the DSLR. GCSE students can choose to study photography as part of their creative options developing their understanding of both the still and moving image using DSLR’s, simple compact cameras and even smartphones. Some students opt to specialise in this to present work for their coursework and examination.

Art lessons at the Senior School take place in a purpose-built Art block on Coronation Street, across the road from the main site. This building has its own exhibition space and superb classrooms for creative minds to bury themselves in paint, fabric and sequins. The Foundation thrives on innovative learning, but what you learn in class is only half the story. What happens on the sports field, in the art and music department, on the stage or in clubs and societies is just as important.

Ben Keeble, Head of Art at the Foundation, says, “The Cambridge Camera Club competition is an excellent opportunity for our students to submit their work and exhibit in the local community, and gain recognition for this creativity. We are delighted with our students continuing success.”

The Mayor of Cambridge, Robert Dryden, will be opening the annual exhibition officially on Monday 25th April at 7.30pm. The work will be on display at St. Andrew’s Street Baptist Church from this day, 1pm – 5pm, and then until Saturday 30th April, 10am – 5pm.

The Stephen Perse Foundation is different. We prepare young people for life in an ever-changing, global and digital world. Through our global outlook we connect students to a world of inspiring opportunities.

By teaching students to think for themselves, we achieve exceptional results – but for us, education is not just about grades. We see the individual behind the results. We develop strength of character, a sense of social responsibility and an ability to innovate and collaborate.

By celebrating diversity and collaboration in school and with our wider community we encourage students to choose a path that is right for them. We recognise potential in every child and inspire young people to achieve their dreams - guiding them every step of the way.
