Strategic IP Forum helps companies understand the value of intellectual property

The University of Cambridge Institute for Manufacturing (IfM) and Cambridge-based intellectual property firm Avidity IP have teamed up to start the Strategic Intellectual Property Forum, a new IP community which aims to help companies in the Cambridge area and beyond better understand intellectual property and how to exploit it on a commercial and strategic basis.

After a successful launch in July, the second Forum, titled ‘Valuing IP Inside Out’, will take place on Tuesday December 8th at the IfM, and will feature an impressive line-up of speakers including:

  • Dr. Michale Bouskila, IP Manager, Biomedical Research Centre at Cambridge University Hospitals
  • Dr. Malcolm Grimshaw, Head of Physical Sciences at Cambridge Enterprise
  • Anne McAleer, Patent Manager at Qualcomm Technologies International
  • Nigel Swycher, CEO, Aistemos
  • Professor Andy Neely, Head of the Institute for Manufacturing

The half-day event will focus on IP valuation, looking at how companies in a variety of industry sectors should value both their own internal IP portfolios and other people’s IP assets – which is crucial when carrying out technology acquisitions. The Forum will give delegates an opportunity to hear from and discuss these topics with some of the region’s leading experts and practitioners.

Dr Frank Tietze is a lecturer at the IfM and a key figure in the SIPF initiative. “When I came to Cambridge in 2014 I was surprised to find no platform for professionals to share IP management learnings and insights, despite the huge relevance of this topic for the high-tech cluster and for University start-ups in this region” says Dr Tietze. “That is what we have started here together with Avidity, and what the Strategic IP Forum is meant to provide.”

Dr Claudia M Duffy is an Associate Attorney at Avidity IP.  “We have co-founded the Strategic IP Forum with a vision to offer an open-source environment for professionals with an interest in IP as a place to come together and learn from each other’s experience and challenges”. She continued, “Building or acquiring IP assets is an expensive and lengthy process which makes it vitally important to know how to leverage these IP assets in order to extract their maximum value”.

The event is for decision-makers and IP managers in businesses of all sizes, with VPs of Technology, Heads of IP and Licensing Executives already registered..

Attendance is free of charge, although pre-event registration is required.
