Emeka Okwu, a doctoral student in Business, has been listed in the 2017 Top 30 Ethnic Minority Future Leaders by EMpower and the Financial Times thanks to his passion for and commitment to diversity.

During his time at global investment bank UBS, Emeka personally captured the data for BAME (black, Asian and minority ethnic) employees and ensured they are assigned to mentors following induction. He also ensured a thorough understanding of the review and promotion process, and encouraged BAME employees to join a network by inviting them to diversity events that are relevant to them.

Away from his work, Emeka, who lives in the borough of Southwark, London, mentors black youngsters on being influencers in society and is a committed volunteer, helping clean parks and streets including Evergreen Adventure Playground, Hackney, London. He was also praised as being a role model for others, sharing his success story as an immigrant in and around Camberwell area.

At Anglia Ruskin University, where he also studied for a Masters in Business Administration, his doctoral research is around the evolution of equality and diversity.

Emeka said: “I am extremely humbled and very thankful to be recognised among a group of stand-out and enthusiastic BAME professionals that are impacting not just the workplace, but the communities we live in.

“Beyond any personal achievement I have received, I feel making the Top 30 Future Leader list is a true testament to the hard work and success to date that we as BAME professionals have achieved together as a team—that’s what makes it most significant and meaningful to me.”

Emeka is joined in the top 30 by representatives of companies such as HSBC, Bloomberg, Deloitte, LinkedIn and BP. The full list is available here: https://www.out-standing.org/empower/2017-top-30-ethnic-minority-future-leaders/
