Student entrepreneur pitches for backing for upmarket leather goods business

Student entrepreneurs from Cambridge Regional College have been pitching to business mogul Richard Branson’s Virgin group in a bid to find support for a new enterprise.

Jordan Christie, 18, who is looking for backing for his luxury leather goods business, put forward his case at the Business Show at ExCeL - the UK’s largest B2B show - with the help of fellow student Callum Marshall, 17.

The young entrepreneurs, both part of CRC’s Peter Jones Enterprise Academy, were the first to make their bid at the Virgin Start-Up stand at the show, putting their case forward in a filmed pitch which will be assessed by business experts.

Jordan has launched his enterprise as part of the specialist course at CRC, which gives young entrepreneurs a head start in the business world. His business ‘Opulent Leather’ will sell leather iPad and iPhone covers aimed at the top end of the market – and he is hoping his pitch will win him support to get his enterprise off to a flying start.

Paul Herbert, who heads the Peter Jones Enterprise Academy at CRC, said the students had put together a strong pitch.

“Jordan has studied the market thoroughly and has identified a niche for his business. He has produced a business plan which targets the top end of the luxury goods market. He and Callum gave an excellent pitch to Virgin and now they’re just waiting to see if they have made a strong enough case to win support,” he said.

Virgin Start-Up helps aspiring entrepreneurs nationwide, working with Virgin Operating Companies such as Virgin Money and Virgin Media to provide mentoring, outreach and marketing to new businesses.

In the meantime Jordan has also been approached by Elevation Networks Start-Up Team and invited to present his business plan to them with a view to them financing the fledgling business.
